When going out for Italian food, if you prefer low key and intimate versus overrun and raucous, I highly recommend Piccola Cucina in Soho. In the minuscule dining room (300 sq ft!) enjoy chef Philip Guardione’s fresh, modern take on cuisine from Sicily, his homeland. Expect skillfully prepared seafood, the highlight here, but there are other tempting options as well, such as veal milanese and lamb shank. And if you think rice balls are those ubiquitous dry, overcooked mounds found at an Italian feast, think again. Guardione has turned them into a must-have appetizer.
